The reason I stopped before is that I felt like I was just getting all of my music from a lot of other better blogs and that was cheap. But to be honest, I think I like the idea of bringing it all together for one straight party. I will give credit where it is due when I know where I got something fun, but for now, dance, I say DANCE, just straight party. It is summer, act like it.

It doesn't really mean that, but its true. Have you ever heard and band and said to you self, "this is so freaking awesome, I need to share this with someone in the next five minutes or I am doing an injustice to mankind," or something similar. TEPR is this band for me. I am going to Germany/Austria in 2 weeks to get this record, well, maybe to hit the slopes, but this will be waiting for me and is almost just as amazing.

Track of the Week: The Hold Steady

Today's post will be one of the many "Track of the Week" posts courtesy of someone named Ben.

The Hold Steady - "Stuck Between Stations"

--- "When John Berryman, prominent American poet and suicidal alcoholic, released 77 Songs in 1964, poet Robert Lowell wrote in a review: "At first the brain aches and freezes at so much darkness, disorder and oddness. After a while, the repeated situations and their racy jabber become more and more enjoyable, although even now I wouldn't trust myself to paraphrase accurately at least half of the sections." Lovely enough, the Hold Steady's frontman/poet Craig Finn writes lyrics that create the same feeling. Finn's racy banter wanders and stumbles, weaving an elaborate net of shady characters and after-parties and Midwestern cities that draws us into the shadowy edges of some great drug-splattered suburban drama.

"Stuck Between Stations" is a nod to Berryman himself, with more of Finn's clever intruiging lyrics and literary allusions, stuff like "He likes the warm feeling but he's tired of all the dehydration – most nights are crystal clear but tonight it's like he's stuck between stations". Also present, of course, is the Hold Steady's fantastic, swaggering bar/arena (barena?) rock that will probably make any PBR within 30 feet magically leap into your throat. BandGinA is definitely the Hold Steady's most accessible album, almost to a fault at times, but it's hard for a Separation Sunday fan to not get goosebumps the first time you hear Finn's first reference to the Mississippi river, a common locale in the last album – which, by no coincidence whatsoever, is the same river that flows under the Washington Ave bridge, where John Berryman jumped to his death in '72. Unfortunately, he missed the water altogether and died in the mud of suffocation. Finn sums it up best: "There was that night that we thought John Berryman could fly. But he didn't. So he died." The perfect hero for the perfect bar band – who would most definitely be disappointed if you haven't started drinking yet." ---

Wiley Releases Two Grime Mixtapes

Wiley, one of the greatest UK Grime producers has recently released the first two of his Tunnel Vision mixtapes for the world to experience. This is great for us on this side of the Atlantic to finally get a decent amount of grime action. Oh Snap! is a monthly party DJed by Dave Nada and DJ Meistro. It was voted by SPIN magazine as one of this years "101 Best Nights Out in America." You can't miss this. Expect a wide variety of music including Hip Hop, Dancehalle, Bmore Club, Funk, Soul, Dance, and the Classics just to get you going.

Rock 'Til You Faint, Birdmonster @ Black Cat

I will start things off with a bit about the opening band. The Sammies are the type of opening band that make you rethink you life decision to try and get to the show late so you miss the opening band. They were the perfect segway to a night of rock and roll. The Sammies hail from Charlotte, NC and have the distinct ability to travel through the rock genres in a single show. The highlight of their act came with the finale, "Train Wreck." You can't help but move to a song like this that hits your veins with an intensity and the essence of rock. Even Jimmy with his possibly broken wrist from being hit by a car couldn't resist his desires to jam as intensely as he could through the entirety of the song. Don't miss the Sammie's on the rest of their tour with Birdmonster.

And now we come to the Birdmonster... I took my first listen due to the blog cloud they road in on when I read a quote about how they feel about playing live music. It was as such, "our main goal is to rock so hard one of us faints." (-David, the guitarist, source GvB) I swear that if they had not been hydrating amazingly, this would have come true. When you see a band member other than the lead singer signing along with every song behind the scenes without a mic, you know they are loving what they are doing. They destroyed the back room of Black Cat and left everyone in the crowd in awe of their rock prowess. The crowd could have listened to them all night. Even the cute Princess Lea in front of me turned to ask if the set seemed short. No, it wasn't too short, it was just that it was the type of show that made you want to listen, and made you want to hear more. Afterwards I felt like I wanted to do just about anything, simply because I knew I had been left in a mood that anything I would have been doing anything in a solid state of ecstasy that Birdmonster had left in my soul. Please catch Birdmonster if they are coming to a city anywhere near you. We thank these San Fran gents for a great showing, and look forward to your return.

There's A Snake On My...

Don't kid yourself, this movie is amazing. Take it for what it is, one of the most entertaining movies of the decade. The best approach is to get really psyced about the movie with a bunch of friends, go see it with all of them, and yell and jump out of your seat during every awesome moment. If you don't like it, snakes don't like you, and no one likes that. Here are a few songs from the sound track, the Cobra Starship music video plays at the end of the movie, and had you not just seen the movie, you would probably hate it. You will however enjoy remembering the movie when you hear the song.

Odd title, yes. I do enjoy however the respect and hospitality the Ancient Greeks would bestow upon travelers and guests and look openly to it in current time. Zeus would have it no other way. Hence, I would just like to comment on how I have had great experiences with contacting DJs for information on just about everything. Ayres has hooked me up with getting tickets to their New years Eve show, which was ridiculous, Devro has commented on his sick bangkok shirt, all of the Rub and Catchdubs answering questions about their equipment and what not, and most recently Mathhead in identifying a song from one of his mixes. Thanks.

My best hospitality can come in the form of getting some words out for Mathhead and Trouble and Bass, the group behind the mix I recently said was absolutely amazing, here.

So I really just wanted to put this picture up in support of Argentina. In music news, I came across a forum for Sharing Arabic MP3s that you should check out if you have ever enjoyed the sounds of the arabic world. there is a huge variety of music on this site and well worth checking out.

My favorite find was this .rar download of an album entitled, Mozart in Egypt Vol. 1... it is simply stunning, and the title pretty much tells you what to expect.

Interesting, the best word to describe the Half Handed Cloud show at Galaxy Hut tonight. The title of this post is a quote from the turrets lady in that crowd that I'm sure made a lot of people feel really awkward. But she was right, it would have been nice to shake the hands of these gentlemen. You can certainly see the Sufjan friendship and inspiration. The interesting comes in when the two halves of Half Handed jump from instrument to instrument and play their unique style of Christian rock with shiftful lyrics and pitch ranging joy. Its really something to see for anyone with an open mind and open ears.

I know I have been non-existant for a while, but I just started a new job and I've actually been really busy, but I'm gonna work harder to get back in the game. Here we go for a round up of a bunch of links to catch us back up.

Storsviet Nix Noltes and Animal Collective Live

Bottom line up front, Storsviet Nix Noltes is amazing. If I had to describe their sound before research, I would call it kick-ass Eastern European gypsy like rock music. Upon further searching, I came across a Foxy Digitalis review and interview. They are an Icelandic, nine person group who met in school and crowd the stage with a huge ensemble of instruments to include, but not limited to... guitars, tuba, trumpet, cello, upright bass, accordion, banjo, and drums. Simply amazing. Their music comes from traditional Eastern European folk music from areas such as, Croatia, Romania, and Hungary... I would just like to highly recommend seeing this band to everyone before I steal some quotes from the interview that I feel are very relevant. I would consider it a cultural experience as well as an amazing show.

How has the tour been so far?

Palli: Drunk.

Is the music you´re playing mostly composed or improvised?

Gestur: The melodies are composed.

Palli: Yeah, the basis is composed, but starting from there, we just do what we feel like. All songs we play are traditionals from Eastern Europe, but we arrange them heavily.

Does the country you´re living in influence your music?

Palli: [sighs] This is always a difficult question. It would be so nice to say that we´re influenced by the elves and the glaciers and the volcanoes and so on, but that´s not it.

Gestur: You were probably referring to traditional Icelandic music. That certainly has influenced us a bit.

Palli: Our music would maybe sound differently, if we were all living in Hungary or Bulgaria. That´s the great thing about the band, we´re totally free in what we want to do.

Gestur: We hear traditionals and what they sound like, but when we play, it sounds differently. That´s what keeps me going and what fascinates me so much. I relate the music we´re playing to so many things.

Palli: All members of the band come from very different backgrounds and we give everybody their space. We don´t say: Don´t play this or that, don´t play romantic or whatever. It´s musicianship. It´s not meant in an arrogant way, but rather that everything just comes naturally.

I was also lucky enough to get one of their US debut albums on the very day it was released in the US, Orkideur Hawai on Bubble Core Records is exceptional and very different from almost everything I have heard before. I was still thinking so much about Nix Noltes when AC came on that at first I did not know what to think. I was listening to is and was suprised at what I heard. Its certainly a different sound from their most recent album, but there was more. I can honestly say that as I listened more and more, I started to feel something that were playing in their musiabsorbedcame obsorbed in the sounds and had to close my eyes to take it in as much as i could. It was like reading a book that you can't put down, anticipating every page turn. This is how I felt with every change in the song and transition to the truly I can truely only describe it as an experience that will make you feel music like never before.

P.S. i can't wait until January 1, 2007 when DC restaurants, restuarants, and pretty much every other public workplace become smoke free. I almost died tonight at Black Cat, honestly. Support SmokefreeDC. I dont knock people for smoking, I just think there are places it should not be done, like indoors. It effects people a lot more than some realize.

I am off for the weekend to North Carolina for one of my friend's house eviction celebration, hopefully I will be back for Annie on sunday.

My Body is Angry, My Feet Disagree... The Go! Team Live

So, my body felt horrible, I had strep throat, my legs and back were in pain, but I would not miss this show. Here is a little discussion that went on.

Body: I don't remember getting into a car crash.
Feet: Is the Go! Team seriously even better live that we could have ever imagined?
Body: Lets go home.
Feet: I'm not leaving the best show I've seen this year, and we will not begin to dance.

Jokes aside, you must go see The Go! Team live if you have any chance at all. An eclectic group of musicians who move from instrument to instrument as much as they do from one side of the stage to the next. With crowd participating sing alongs and insane old school recorder usage, this was one of the most thought and dance provoking shows I have ever seen. The played at least 4-5 songs that haven't been released yet, and I am happy to say, we all have a lot to look forward to. The lead singer and rapper Ninja was just as excited to be there as the fans. One of the newest songs even gave me a Bmore feel which her rapping and the rest of the UK band killing it behind her. They are seriously the perfect example of a team. The beauty of the drummer Chi's voice when she slowed it down a bit and went solo was enough to crumble any man. If you want to go to a show where you can let loose and have the time of your life, The Go! Team is the live show for you. Go forth and they will make you dance.

Headphones For Shoes...

So I didnt really know what to expect when I got my first, by email request to check out a band. I must say I am quite impressed. La Casa Nueva

So I officially feel moved to DC and on my way to a local status. There has been a lot of music this week so I will try to get you some fresh stuff to start the weekend right. If you would like to know where I will be this weekend, you may, Saturday night I will be checking out Bluestate at the Black Cat here in Washington where local bloggers hit the decks and take you on an adventure of rock and dance that leaves you looking for a cigarette, and then you realize that smoking is horrible and you move that motivation to the person next to you, or a glass of chocolate milk. lastly is a shot in the dark... I have enjoyed playing around with Fruity Loops making my self little songs here and there to pass the time. They have always felt like stuff that I just really get into and still think that I would be the only person to enjoy them. They don't have a lot of structure, but they have certain parts where I just feel amazing and get the biggest smile on my face the world has ever seen. I've thought to myself that if someone actually liked one and it was a guy, we would instantly be friends, and if it was a girl, I would marry her. Here is most my recent and I think one of the best. Top DJs of the Year, Respect the Q&A

Just like this Ecuadorian family, life is about respect and interactions with others. I thought I would take a little initiative and contact a group of DJs whom I have huge respect for, and who inspire me to become an active DJ very soon. Below are the responses of four individuals who have truly struck me with with shock and awe at some point in the recent past. Whether with mixtape or live shows, these DJs have a lot of knowledge and party factor to pass on to everyone.

Without further adieu, wisdom from DJ Ayres, Cosmo Baker, DJ Eleven, and Nick Catchdubs:

DJ Ayres

1. When did you first start DJing?
1996

2. Who was one of your first inspirations to become a DJ yourself?
Mark Ronson (he went to the same college as me and was playing on campus a lot at the time) and Jamie Hodge (he was also a friend in college and he had some records out on Plus 8 and Clear - he tought me how to mix and a lot about production). Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area was a dj inspiration and helped me record my first mix CD. I learned how to rock a party watching DJ Mr Vince and DJ Ease.

3. What was the first equipment you bought to get started?
A shitty Numark mixer and a Technics 1200, which I put together with my roommate's 1200 to have a complete set up. I had some big JBL speakers to do house parties.

4. What equipment do you use on stage currently?
2 Technics 1200s, a Pioneer DJM-909 mixer, Serato, an IBM Thinkpad, a Roland SP 404 sampler, Ortofon needles, Sony headphones, Shure microphone.

5. What equipment if other, do you use to make music off stage?
MicroKorg and SP 404, a PC and software.

6. What type of laptop do you use for your music if any?
IBM Thinkpad T42

7. What program(s) do you use to create mixes and one stage performances?
Cool Edit Pro for multitracking, Serato for performances and parties

8. What are some upcoming projects or shows we should be on the look out for?
The Rub is touring North America in the late spring/early summer. This year be on the look out for a battle record and mix CD collaboration with Tittsworth, The Rub EPs #6-8, more Rub mixes including It's the Motherfucking Remix Vol 3, a New Orleans Bounce mix with JD, Glamorous Life 3 with DJ Eleven, and some surprises I can't give away yet.

Cosmo Baker

1. When did you first start DJing?
I started Djing around 1989, and quickly graduated from the bedroom to house parties to nightclubs.

2. Who was one of your first inspirations to become a DJ yourself?
My main inspirations to start DJing were DJ Too Tuff of the Tuff Crewand DJ Jeff Mills (not the Techno DJ from Detroit) who used to DJ the"Live At After Midnight" weekend broadcasts. If you're from Philly you know what I'm talking about.

3. What was the first equipment you bought to get started?
I had one Technics SL-B202 and one SL-B300, a Gemini Scratchmastermixer (the one with the wood paneling) a Gemini DS 1224 sampler and a Boss Dr. Rhythm 550 drum machine. Then I worked in a grocery store and eventually saved up to get one, and then a second Technics 1210, both of which I still have and use today.

4. What equipment do you use on stage currently?
Two Technics 1200/1210 turntables, a Pioneer DJM 909 mixer (preferably, although I'll use a Pioneer 707 or a Rane TTM-56,) a Boss Dr. SampleSP-303, Ortofon Electro cartridges with Technics headshells, Pioneer headphones.

5. What equipment if other, do you use to make music off stage?
The same stuff as above but I also use an Akai MPC2000, an Oxygen 8 Midi keyboard, Fernandez guitar, Peavey Studio 112 amp, and a few rack mounted effects units. I also record everything into Pro Tools, using a DigiDesign M-Box set-up with an Apple G5 dual processor tower.

6. What type of laptop do you use for your music if any?
I have a maxed out 12" iBook G4. Works perfectly.

7. What program(s) do you use to create mixes and one stage performances?
Right now I use Serato Scratch Live, but I'm also interested in working with Abelton Live. Plus, can't ever forget that vinyl still sounds better than any digital file.

8. What are some upcoming projects or shows we should be on the look out for?
Lots of stuff. A gang of mixes and CDs coming out this year, and I'm really committed to putting out a few more records this year. I'm also going to be on the road a ton this year.

DJ Eleven

1. When did you first start DJing?
I first started DJing in my first year of college while doing a radio show on the college station. From there got into doing parties.

2. Who was one of your first inspirations to become a DJ yourself?
There wasn't one person that I can point to as THAT person who inspired me. It was more a natural progression from doing college radio to doing parties around the school.

3. What was the first equipment you bought to get started?
One Technics 1500 belt drive turntable. Man, it was a slow start.

4. What equipment do you use on stage currently?
Two Technics 1200 turntables, either a Pioneer 500/600 or 909 mixer, and Serato.

5. What equipment if other, do you use to make music off stage?
I primarily use turntables & Pro Tools, but am getting into using Reason & an Akai MPD16.

6. What type of laptop do you use for your music if any?
An Apple Powerbook G4.

7. What program(s) do you use to create mixes and one stage performances?
On stage I just use Serato. Off stage, see #5

8. What are some upcoming projects or shows we should be on the look out for?
I'm going to be dropping "Fight Music: The Best of M.O.P." in mid-February, a mix of roots reggae in early March, a history of Bay Area hip hop in early April, and a mixCD/compilation for Antidote/Sactuary records over the summer.

Nick Catchdubs

1. When did you first start DJing?
I bought my first turntables in the summer of 2003 after graduating college.

2. Who was one of your first inspirations to become a DJ yourself?
I had always played/written music, been in bands, etc, and was wanting to get more into production - hip hop and electronic/sample based music. Then right before i graduated, i put together a bunch of CDs for parties and got really into how track selection worked on people's mood, and that "oh shit" factor of throwing in a song people forgot that they loved. at the same time a lot of really good mixtapes came out (ronson had a mix for his"here comes the fuzz" album i enjoyed a lot, there was the hollertronix'"never scared" tape, and some others) and the lightbulb went off that DJing could be a way to put together all the things i enjoyed. i was always aware of mixtapes and mixshow DJs on rap radio, but it wasnt until that summer that the lightbulb went off that it was something i wanted to do.

3. What was the first equipment you bought to get started?
Two technics 1200s and a rane TTM 56 mixer

4. What equipment do you use on stage currently?
Just whatever turntables/mixer the club has, while running serato scratchoff a mac laptop. i was just bringing vinyl before but serato is great -it keeps the exact same feel of vinyl, but lets you play your own productions, remixes, and new songs instantly, and means you dont have to carry crates of records everywhere. plus it's pretty much become a DJ standard so its easy enough to switch laptops when both DJs are running it. sometimes i'll use a 303 sampler to trigger air horn/bomb drop type effects as well.

5. What equipment if other, do you use to make music off stage?
I use an mbox to instruments and vocals. i have a microkorg synth, epiphone les paul guitar and fender pbass. also a 303 sampler and an old boss dr groove drum machine for 808 sounds. for software, i work with samples and do editing in cooledit - not the most advanced program out there but it's what i'm used to and i can work fast in it.

6. What type of laptop do you use for your music if any?
mac g5 laptop.

7. What program(s) do you use to create mixes and one stage performances?
Live its just the turntables and serato. i use cooledit to sequence for mixtapes but the actual "mixing" is done live off the turntables.

8. What are some upcoming projects or shows we should be on the look out for?
A bunch of new mixtapes planned for the first half of 06, plus original remixes and production work.

I'm the King of New York

I guess I should call this my Ode to Lemon-Red blog because I have some awesome stuff that I found from his site. The first is an MP3 that I fell in love with the minute I heard who it was, and what he sampled. Juelz Santana, and "King of New York" from the musical Newsies. I confess I really like a lot of musicals, and this one is seriously my favorite, hence, the song is awesome.

Welcome to the Oh! Six... NYC Style

It was a 12 hour train ride from North Carolina that led to an amazing trip. Shouts to Streets, Nugget, and Stretch for an awesome time. We went to two awesome parties/shows that you must try and catch before you die.

For the New Years Eve Eve party we went to The MotherFucker Party at Avalon, an old cathedral. The Juan Maclean played and were absolutely heart stopping. Can't really link to it, but visit the site and check out the radios, its electronic/intrumental/awesome/dnb/synth/rock/amazing.

The second pic is from New Years Eve at The Rub Party in Brooklyn's Southpaw. If you are ever going to the City, plan your trip around one of their shows. I guarantee some of the greatest music you have ever heard and a dance party that will make you dance like it was the last night of your life.

As for some mixes and sounds to keep your feet busy...

For your grime fix, head over to Hostile Airwaves and go to the download section and get the mix "True Grime" (mp3), and as many of the grime episodes as you can. This is some of the freshest grime you will hear.

Lastly, people love LCD Soundsystem, you can't deny its ability to make a crowd want to move. I saw them in DC once, and during the song "Yeah (Crass Version)" I glanced up, and not one of the hundreds of people there were standing still, it was absolutely amazing. Hip Hop Scavenger Hunt

The purpose of this blog is to serve of a means of getting music out to people.
